November 2024

Starting an official ASCE chapter has always been our goal. What started as 7 passionate civil engineering students has grown into an organization with 80 active members in just two years. Through dedication and a positive mindset, we were able to achieve our goal.

We take every opportunity to promote our chapter and educate students about ASCE, highlighting the benefits of joining a civil engineering student organization are highlighted. Under the leadership of Anya Carlson, our student president, we have organized various events for students, including field trips, guest speakers, service events, and more. We believe that offering civil engineering students a glimpse into real-world experiences can inspire greater involvement in our chapter. Our events have been highly successful, and as we continue to grow, we see an increase in interest from students to participate.

In the past year, we also had the opportunity to send our students to several civil engineering symposiums. This provided them with opportunities to network, meet professionals, explore job opportunities, and gain valuable insights from research presentations to panel discussions. Attending these symposiums has also allowed us to establish our chapter’s presence as a part of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC). Additionally, we participated in the sandcastle competition at the ASCE Region 6 Student Symposium. It was inspiring to see how motivated our students were to attend next year’s symposium and compete in the larger events, pushing the minds of students.

We remain actively engaged in maintaining our chapter’s involvement, encouraging continual growth. In terms of future events, we have a tour of the new Harbor Bridge Replacement Project in Corpus Christi, host guest speakers, organize community service events, and hold social engineering networking events. While we face challenges in student involvement, we are encouraged by the potential and initiative shown by those stepping up to take on these responsibilities.

Our TAMU-CC ASCE chapter would like to thank those who have supported us in becoming an official ASCE student chapter. We take great pride in this achievement and want to convey that we are committed to working hard to make our chapter a success. We believe this chapter is setting the precedent for years to come and encouraging the advancement of civil engineering students.
