Meet Angie Fealy PE
The ASCE Texas Section Board of Direction members were asked to fill out a questionnaire so that the Section’s members might get to know them a little better on a personal level. These are Director at Large, Angie Fealy’s answers.
What do you love the most about being a civil engineer?
Two things really stand out. First, I thrive on solving the puzzles that come with the job. Whether it’s fitting everything the client wants onto a challenging site or navigating a project with tight restrictions, finding creative solutions is incredibly rewarding. Second, there’s nothing quite like seeing my designs come to life and being used by people every day. (Speaking of, you’re welcome for those pickleball courts in Anna, Texas!)
When did you know you wanted to be a civil engineer?
It might sound funny, but I think it was practically preordained! While my sisters got dolls and games, I was always gifted Legos, tinker toys, and puzzles. Building the tallest tower or figuring out a complex kinetic model ignited a passion for construction and problem-solving that never faded!
Give us your best 2-3 sentence piece of advice for the next generation of civil engineers.
A mentor once told me to be a “sponge” and soak up everything I could. I wholeheartedly agree! But don’t wait for knowledge to come to you. Be proactive, research, and ask questions. You’d be surprised how often someone has faced a similar challenge and has a valuable solution to share.
Everyone has 15 seconds of fame (at least), where have you “spent” or “earned” yours?
I actually competed on a national team! Imagine 6-8 canoes filled with 20 paddlers racing at full speed for 500 meters – that’s dragonboat racing. In 2018, I trained hard enough to make Team USA and even brought home two gold medals from international competitions!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time you can catch me outside, how about that.
How do you order your eggs?
Three eggs, over easy, please!
What was your high school nickname?
With all the sports I played, my last name, Fealy, became my permanent nickname back then!
Give us your best joke!
Two fish swim into a concrete wall. One turns to the other and says, “Dam!”
