Building Connections: A President’s Journey Across Texas Branches

Howdy Texas Section!

It’s been a whirlwind start to my presidency, and I couldn’t be more energized. I’m diving into one of my primary goals: visiting each branch, joining milestone events, and supporting the incredible work happening across our state. October was a productive month with in-person visits to the San Antonio, Brazos, and Dallas Branches.

In San Antonio, I had the honor of installing their new officers and learning about the Branch’s remarkable history, which has supported our profession since 1949. Their dedication to UTSA is inspiring, with the Younger Member Committee actively involved in outreach to strengthen the student-to-member transition. San Antonio is a vibrant and welcoming Branch—if you’re in town, drop by their next luncheon or meeting. Congratulations to President Miranda Jennings and her new Board; I challenged them to make this their most impactful year yet!

In Brazos, I installed officers and presented on the USEPA Brownfields program, a key initiative for revitalizing underserved communities. As our second-oldest Branch, founded in 1939, Brazos has a rich legacy. I encouraged them to deepen their connection with the ASCE Student Chapter of Texas A&M University, nurturing the next generation of leaders. Congratulations to President Stephen Mobley and his new Brazos Board—I have no doubt this will be a banner year for them.

Celebrating my home Branch in Dallas was a true joy. At their Centennial Gala, ASCE Society Past President Marsia Geldert-Murphey joined us to install officers, and Texas Section Executive Director Jenni Peters presented awards. I was thrilled to recognize Dr. Jim Williams, UTA professor and recipient of the Section’s Professional Service Award, as well as Dallas Branch Engineer of the Year, Julie Jones. It was a heartfelt moment to connect with longtime friends and celebrate the legacy of the Dallas Branch. As I said in my speech, “Baby, I’m home.”

Next, I traveled to the Rio Grande Valley Branch on November 13. I installed their new officers, shared a Section update, and gave a talk on ethics. At CECON, I promised them a visit, and I’m thrilled to have kept that promise.

Thank you all for your support. Let’s make this a year to remember!
